Background
One of the established pickle jar dealers in Germany was in need of a reliable manufacturing partner to enhance reliability in packaging its pickle line in retail. The 720ml glass pickle jars, which had a round body, short neck and 82mm twist-off lug finish were customized to be used with metal vacuum lids. The reason they had to go with Yeboda was because of our background as a production-based supplier, our meticulous control of neck-finish, and that we can test sealing compatibility with caps prior to large scale production.
Challenges
Oil and Brine Leakage Around Lids
During storage and transportation, some jars showed minor leakage around the lid area, leaving brine stains on labels and cartons.
Inconsistent Cap Sealing During Filling
At the customer’s filling facility, some lids failed to seal properly due to uneven torque and irregular engagement with the jar threads.
Cause Analysis
Our engineering and QC teams performed detailed inspections and identified two key issues:
- Slight dimensional variations in the jar’s lug finish height and thread profile, reducing uniform pressure on the sealing compound.
- Inconsistent mouth flatness due to residual glass stress, affecting the contact surface between lid liner and jar rim.
Solution
Precision Finish Control
We recalibrated neck ring molds and introduced strict tolerance checks for lug thread height, angle, and finish diameter. Every batch was verified using go/no-go gauges.
Improved Annealing and Rim Flatness
Our production team optimized annealing parameters to reduce internal stress and ensure a flatter sealing surface for vacuum lids.
Cap Compatibility Testing
We conducted torque tests and vacuum retention simulations with the client’s lids to confirm that sealing strength met export standards.
Results
After implementing these improvements, leakage issues were eliminated and sealing consistency significantly improved. The German pickle jar dealer reported fewer complaints from filling partners and more stable product performance during shipping and storage. By working with Yeboda, the client secured reliable glass jar quality and a long-term packaging solution for their expanding pickle distribution business.
